The Restylane Family of Dermal Fillers

The Restylane family of fillers, developed by Galderma, is a well-established line of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers used to enhance facial appearance and reduce the signs of aging. They are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin, known for its ability to retain moisture and contribute to the plumpness and elasticity of youthful skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts and binds to water to restore volume. But naturally occurring hyaluronic acid diminishes with age. Hyaluronic acid fillers act like the naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in the skin to provides a natural look and feel. Restoring skin hydration produces a natural glow.

The Restylane family includes several products, each designed for specific purposes and areas of application. The key characteristics of these products are:

1. Restylane (7): The original product in the family, it is primarily used for correcting moderate facial wrinkles and folds, such as the nasolabial folds. It can also be used for lip enhancement. Effects typically lasts 6-12 months.
2. Restylane Lyft (3): This filler is designed for deeper injection into the facial tissue. It’s used for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds and for cheek augmentation and the correction of age-related midface contour deficiencies. It is also used to restore fullness to the backs of the hands by replenishing lost volume. Effects typically lasts 6-18 months.
3. Restylane Silk (8): This product is designed specifically for lip augmentation and the smoothing of wrinkles around the mouth. Its smaller particle size allows for a smoother result in these delicate areas. Effects typically lasts 6-12 months.
4. Restylane Refyne (5) & Defyne (6): These fillers are designed for injection into the facial tissue to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. They are noted for maintaining natural movement and expressions due to their unique cross-linking technology, known as XpresHAn Technology™. Effects typically last 12-18 months.
5. Restylane Kysse (2): This filler is used for lip augmentation and for correction of upper perioral vertical lip lines. It’s formulated to provide a natural look and feel. Effects can last 6-9 months.
6. Restylane Contour (4): This is a cheek filler designed to define and contour the midface area, while maintaining natural movement and expressions. Effects can last 12 months.
7. Restylane Eyelight (1): This product is designed to fill in the undereye hollows to help people look more refreshed, while maintaining a natural look and feel. Effects can last up to 18 months.

You can expect temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness at the injection sites. Side effects are rare and usually resolve in few days after injection. The effectiveness of these fillers typically lasts between 6 to 18 months, depending on the specific product, the area treated, and individual patient factors. The longevity of the results from is also influenced by the skill and technique of the injector. To maintain the desired effects, patients may choose to have follow-up treatments or touch-ups after the initial treatment.
